I’m posting this to help other buyers be aware of issues before purchasing…
The S1 probably is as good as some reviewers say, BUT
Because of the problems I encountered I can’t use this dash-cam, so I can’t comment on how well it performs.
I would have returned it but illness prevented me from trying to install it within the time frame to return it expired.
I hope MioFive will consider replacing my device.
I purchased the MioFive S1 in June from Amazon.
I believe that I was sent a defective device (there were missing parts AND
it seems like someone had trouble programing it, so returned it).
The manual’s directions aren’t easy to follow, they do not clearly correspond to the dash-cam’s buttons and digital controls.
Some features seem to have been previously set and are no longer accessible to be changed:
• the date is incorrect
•the screen image is upside down
therefore the buttons no longer correspond to the screen
controls (left, right, back, select).
•the device’s built-in menus are frozen
•because the screen is frozen, the “format” function is
inaccessible
•the directions say to format the Micro-SD card before using,
but the cam immediately starts to record when turned on,
•there’s no way to stop the incessant voice announcements.
•Reset and restart/reboot do not work.
•All of the above suggests that the S1 had been used and
returned before I received it.
•Other issues include:
•The FIRST instruction in the manual says:
“1 To Install the electrostatic sticker…
Park your car in a safe area, and turn off the car engine.
Take out the electrostatic sticker from the packing box and install it in the
recommended area on the windshield, as shown in the figure below. Please clean
the windshield and remove the air bubbles between the electrostatic sticker
and the windshield during the installation.”
Later it says:
“Note: Please DO NOT attach the dash cam with the sticker to the
windshield before the camera CALIBRATION to ensure the AI
feature works properly.”
•A lot of new vehicles no longer have cigarette lighter outlets (CLO)
and have only a few USB-A or -C ports which are often used
for charging or Apple / Android Play or other devices.
• for some large vehicles, such as full-size trucks and buses, the cable
provided is not long enough to connect the cam to a power source and be
concealed. You can only get 11.5 ft of cable, but it comes as
part of their Hardwire Kit ($29).
MioFive does not provide anything longer and I haven’t found any
other long cables that will work.
•Correct me if I’m wrong – I don’t see how MioFive can claim AI
capability, which is an intense computing process. There are a
few useful features which they call AI, but it seems it’s just
special software.
•The Hardwire Kit (extra) comes with a number of parts,
including fuses and special wires with fittings (TAPS)
which are supposed to plug into fuse slots.
WHAT IS NOT MENTIONED IS THAT THEY ARE INCOMPATIBLE
with at least some 2024 GM full-size trucks (and probably others). GM now mostly uses triple blade fuses and fuse slots.
A few fuses are mini or micro with two blades.
The fuses and taps provided by MioFive are standard two-bladed types. Not good.
The fuse boxes/panels in my truck are small and pretty crowded so you can’t easily get at the slots.
•Also included is a tool they call a CROW BAR!!!!!
It is actually a small piece of plastic you can use if you want to conceal the cables.
